#TonysSoDoverse: Congratulations to Leslie Odom, Jr. for lead actor in Hamilton; Daveed Diggs for featured actor in Hamilton; Renee Elise Goldsberry for featured actress in Hamilton; and Cynthia Erivo for lead actress in The Color Purple.

By Clover Hope at Jezebel:

Hamilton’s greatness and the obsessive spotlight allowed its predominantly black and brown cast and crew a shot at a trophy in not just the main categories—Paul Tazewell won for best musical costume design and Alex Lacamoire took the win for best orchestrations. After the show, Diggs credited the diversity on Broadway and told reporters, “The way that this season feels, it’s all very new to me. I know what I felt like growing up, like there wasn’t a place for me.”

This message of black actors having to find their place popped up in the incredible acceptance speeches, too. Diggs praised his parents for supporting his creative streak in preschool. “My mom gave me permission to do something that everybody else wasn’t doing,” he said. Odom Jr. thanked the cast of color in his speech and told Lin-Manuel, “You’ve given us a new vision of what’s possible.”
